The guide

Your M-Pesa paybill or till, on one screen.

Daraja Studio shows the payments that arrive on the number you already own, sends money out from it, keeps the people and businesses you pay, and repeats Safaricom’s own words when something fails. You run it yourself, with your own Daraja app.

What it does

Which one suits you

Your own studio

One business, one paybill or till, on a server you run.

For a shop, a school, a clinic, a landlord or a church: you own the shortcode and want the payments, the people and the reports in one place, on your own machine.

Start here

The hub

One paybill, many businesses on it, told apart by account number.

For the organisation that owns a shortcode and serves other businesses under it. Each business keeps its own payments, statements, invoices and customers, money that arrives for one can be swept straight on to its own number, and the Developer pages hand the systems you build their keys and addresses.

The same code with more switched on. Studio calls it the Platform tier.

KEPAS runs it for you

For a business with no paybill of its own.

KEPAS owns the paybill, gives you an account number on it, and runs a studio for you where your payments arrive under that number. The paybill is not yours, and the money sits with KEPAS until it is paid out to you.

Start with your own paybill

Four things are needed: your own paybill or till number, a Daraja app from Safaricom’s developer portal, a server that can run Docker, and an https address Safaricom can reach. Sending money out, and prompting a payer’s phone, each need one more thing from Safaricom, and the setup asks for those only if you turn them on.

The code is at github.com/kepas-tech/daraja-studio, free to self-host and change under the Elastic Licence 2.0, which does not allow offering it to others as a hosted service. Bring it up with Docker Compose and open the address; the first-run setup asks one question per screen, and the guide shows where each answer comes from on Safaricom’s two portals, and what still has to be done there.

Your shortcode stays yours, and the money settles in your own M-Pesa account.
